10 yr old Spenser's story
I was diagnosed with diabetes in November of 99. I was only six years old. My mom had taken me to the doctor because I was always thirsty and I was up several times during the night. After doing some tests the doctor told me I was a type 1 diabetic. At that time I did not know what that meant. I had to be in the hospital for about a week to get my blood sugar under control. I had to learn how to measure my food and to take finger sticks. Other than all of my finger sticks I had to take two shots a day. In May of 2002 I got on the insulin pump and it has changed my life. I play sports and I no longer worry about becoming low and I feel much more normal. I will continue to take care of myself until they have a cure. But for now I am glad I have the pump!
