17 year old Erika

Hello...My name is Erika Maas and I have had diabetes for six years. I have had the pump for almost three. When I was diagnosed I was 11 years old. Now I am 17. Diabetes has been one of the most difficult aspects of my life. But it has also been one of the most rewarding at the same time. Before I went on the pump I was in the ER all the time and was really sick. I had horrible headaches. When I got on the pump after months of fighting with the insurance company I felt so much better. My headaches got better, the headaches that the doctors said were not caused by diabetes, and I got to improve the overall quality of my life. I now run a support group in my area for the youth with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. This has been my pride and joy seeing my group grow from 5 people, which 3 were my family members, to 35 at our last meeting. I am very proud of what my local CDE and I have accomplished. It has been teamwork that has kept me going good with the pump. I would never go back to shots. I love the pump and the new freedoms that come along with the pump. I also want to say that without the help, support, and encouragement of my parents I would not be here today to tell you about myself. Please remember to respect your parents and let them know you love them everyday. Parents just remember that your child is working as hard as you are to keep their Diabetes under control.

Sincerely,

Erika Maas
